Rodrigo Mendez was born and raised in Galicia and has spent his life there collaborating with the likes of Raul Perez and working on his own projects. Bodegas y Viñedos Rodrigo Mendez winery is located in Meano, in the subzone Val do Salnes, the most north-western area of Rias Baixas. His passion is to show Albariño in a different light, back to the time before stainless steel fermentation became the norm in the 1980’s.
His vineyards are not typical Galician vineyards: they’re hidden away up in the mountains, surrounded by pine forests. Don’t worry, the vines don’t miss the ocean winds because the high altitude keeps them at a steady cool temperature. The vineyards are quite isolated, which means Rodrigo is able to farm using organic methods as he does not have to worry about diseases or pesticides drifting in from neighbouring vineyards. He grows native Galician grape varieties and uses natural yeasts to ferment them.
