2017 Burnside Vineyard Chardonnay, McHenry Hohnen, Margaret River, W Australia
"Peach and toasted hazelnut aromas mark the nose of the 2017 Burnside Vineyard Chardonnay. It's medium to full-bodied, round yet fresh, with plenty of lime-driven length on the finish. It should drink well for a decade.
Started as partnership between David Hohnen (founder of Cape Mentelle) and Murray McHenry, McHenry Hohnen sources grapes from three main vineyards: Burnside, planted in 1981, is closest to the Indian Ocean, tucked into a bend in the Margaret River itself; Calgardup Brook, planted in 1998, is in the cool subregion of Karridale; and furthest south, but with a northerly aspect, is Hazel's Vineyard, also the site of the winery. It's an impressive structure built primarily of rammed earth, with steel and glass superstructure that offers a lovely view over the vineyard. Winemaker Jacopo Dalli Cani lead me through a tasting of the current releases. The strength here is Chardonnay, but there's a range of grapes planted at Hazel's, including such warmth-loving varieties as Grenache, Zinfandel and Mataro." Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate.
