2017 Albarino, Bodegas Calazul, Rias Baixas, Spain
One of my favourite white grape varieties, this Albarino is from the Val do Salnes region and has classically intense aromas of pear, apple and peach. On the palate these flavours are complemented by stone fruit characters and an enticingly refreshing finish.
Bodegas Calazul is located in the Val do Salnés region which is home to the largest number of vineyards and wineries within the Rías Baixas DO. Situated on the lower banks of the river Umia, the topography sees low rolling hills with the best vineyards planted on the slopes. The close proximity to the Atlantic brings coastal influences and provides a wide a range of soil types, including granite, clay and sand. Albariño was first introduced to Galicia in the 12th century and thrives in these conditions. Albariño accounts for up to 90% of all vines planted in Rías Baixas and the area was awarded Denominación de Origen in 1988.
