Macan is the result of a unique new partnership between Vega Sicilia and Benjamin de Rothschild born out of a meeting between Pablo Alvarez and Benjamin de Rothschild in 2003.
This is the third release of MACAN Clásico and MACAN.
The philosophy of Macan is to make a wine reflecting a particular place. That place in question is San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta. The elevation here can vary widely (the 10th century village used to act as a fortress for the people of Navarre), and the proximity of the Ebro river provides the 40 parcels of old vine Tempranillo with beneficial growing conditions. In a vintage such as 2011, which was very dry in Rioja (and in most regions in Spain for that matter), such a privileged vineyard location undoubtedly contributed to the final quality in the bottle. The vines are, for the most part, over 30 years old and the harvest took place earlier than usual between the 19th and 25th of September.

The 2011 will undeniably be more heterogeneous than the widely acclaimed 2010 vintage. But as caution and care were de rigueur throughout the growing period this is a vintage that is very satisfying: the early harvest and Atlantic influence helped preserve a welcome degree of finesse in the wines. Grapes for both wines are vinified partly in wood and partly in steel vats and then matured for 14 to 17 months in French oak, of which 70% is new. 30% of the malolactic fermentation was carried out in wood. Javier Ausas favours the use of Allier and Vosges wood for this project as he believes the finer and tighter grains help enhance the elegance in the wines.

At this point, the blending decisions for both wines are made in the cellar rather than being based on the individual vineyards and follows countless tastings throughout the making and ageing period of the wines. These really are delightful wines and their release has now become an exciting date in the calender !

Immensely likeable, this is bursting with ripe yet fresh berry fruits with hints of spices and subtle vanilla notes. Lighter framed than its predecessor, this Clásico is a testimony to careful handling during vinification in this easily extractible vintage. This wine will please for its immediacy yet undeniable presence. A superbly handled vinification with a fine balance in the mouth between tannins, fruits and fresh acidity.
"Putting my nose in the glass of the 2011 Macán Clásico took me immediately to Rioja, which is very good, especially for such a young wine. This is aimed for early consumption where they search for polished tannins, good acidity and drinkability. It has the telltale combination of wild berries, spices and hints of leather, showing some aniseed and cured meat notes after time in the glass. It's a delicate wine, with subtle aromas and a fine thread of acidity coated by fine-grained tannins and pungent flavors. This is accessible from today, but should also develop well in bottle, gaining in complexity.“ Luis Gutierrez. 92 Robert Parker
